The BetterBadNews panel examine how a recent Gillmor Gang podcast managed to make tech talk as entertaining as a barroom brawl. What caused the dust up was a simple question posed by Steve Gillmor when he asked the gang to predict the outcome of upcoming congressional races.
Perhaps tempers are still raw over the news that PayPerPost payola will be polluting the blogosphere more efficiently thanks to Tim Draper and other VC funders who should know better than to help launch a vile enterprise like PayPerPost; a startup company that pays bloggers with low self esteem to link to products and services nobody wants to talk about.
Gillmor’s tough love approach toward errant gang members is wickedly entertaining but if the violence and verbal abuse escalate any further this particular podcasting venue is bound to become too contentious for Doc Searls, a gentlemen known for his aggressive avoidance of confrontation. Doc’s best line: “This episode qualifies as a ham sandwich.”
The Gang’s balance of power shifts continuously somwhere between respect, affection and utter distain for each other. “You know what? You’re an idiot,” said Jason Calacanis to Dana Gardner. “You over analyze everything.” Mike Arrington was rendered speechless by Calacanis’s attack on Gardner but Gardner came out ahead on points. Calacanis won on schmalz.
